Court Reporting continues.

Summer time college classes are now in session. My motivation level has picked back up and thank goodness for that. Finally, we have found a Court Reporter who uses the same modern system I use for steno. She has given me five actual trail tapes and as many phone calls as I need to survive. She will receive my first e-mail tomorrow. Plus, my friend Kat is always encouraging me with new ideas how we can become the best Court Reporters as possible. I love this profession, but am leery of the unknown. The Court Reporter who is helping me with my system mentioned about an internship. Yes, oh yes, I will defiantly need that, too. Her firm handles trials and she mentioned this would be the best experience I can use to enhance my profession. What if the attorneys speak 280 words-per-minute? Naah, that surely won’t happen. Besides, a tape recorder will help with fast talking attorneys who just want to get through the day.

I hadn't thought about attorneys who talk too fast. I've heard of Fast Talking Lawyers but that wasn't said in a nice way. Tape recorders makes way more sense than my solution which would be to run up to one of them, shake him by the shoulders and shriek, "For the love of Mike, speak slower - can't you!"

To help ease the pain of fast talking lawyers, we are allowed to add a nickname in our steno that reads his name correctly. He does not know we changed his name to one of our own choice while his name prints correctly on the screen. It's a secret steno password in our dictionary. "Too Fast” which will print “Mr. John Smith Attorney at Law?" Or we could just enter “Stubborn” as his name while “Mr. John Smith, Attorney At Law” is the only thing he or anyone will ever see. Unless we slip and actually type the work “Stubborn.” Ops. Delete, Delete …………

Sort of like when I do transcriptions from tape. Instead of the detective or suspect names, I might substitute z: or Putz: instead of Shellahammer or Smackdowndragout. Then I go back and change all the z's in the document to the real name. I love a good shortcut!
